Manarola - Cinque Terre, Italy

Manarola & Riomaggiore are probably the most popular of the Cinque Terre villages. Manarola is perched on rock with its small fishing port between two boulders. At its closest point to the sea the buildings tower above the sea level and in winter it as a truly amazing sight to see the waves crashing against the walls. How they have stood the constant crashing and erosion from the sea must surely remain a mystery.

Manarola is probably the quietest and most reserved of the Cinque Terre villages. It is characterized by its very narrow stone paths running through the brightly coloured tower houses. A white pyramid of cement stands amongst the houses and is clearly visible from the sea, this serves as a landmark for sailors. Up high in the village of Manarola is the church of San Lorenzo, a beautiful building which has a rose window and twelve decorated columns, it took 37 years to build and was finished in 1375. Manarola is probably the oldest village in the Cinque Terre, its ancient origins exhibit a strong sense of authenticity and a feeling that time stood still here. The locals in Manarola speak in dialect which is called Manarolese, this is slightly different to the Italian spoken by its Cinque Terre neighbours. Access to Manarola is easy either by foot or by train and in the summer there is also a ferry.

Walking from Manarola to Riomaggiore is a very easy walk along what is known as the Via De L'amore . Although there are a few steep steps to climb at the start from the Riomaggiore end you are soon on a man made flat pathway all the way. The typical duration is about fiteen minutes. However we strongly recommend a stop half way at the cafe bar. The views are spectacular, with the table being placed on a metal grid whhereby you can see the rocks and sea below. In addition you will pass the lovers spot, another ten minute stop unless on your own.
